General easys 2.1 is a Slackware-based installable distribution that comes on one CD. The aim of this Germany based company is “to provide open linux solutions for small and enterprise business” and “to build stable products based on standard and open software products that integrate well in existing environments”. easys 2.1 uses KDE-light as a desktop environment and brings only one application per task. The ISO file to download still occupies the whole 700MB CD.
Some of the applications can be reached through KDE main menu:
and some by right-clicking a file you want to open in file manager (Konqueror) or by entering a appropriate command in terminal (aterm). When I tried to open some screen shots I took in .png format (right click -->open with), I was presented with some applications I haven't found in main menu. Later on I also found that if you are accessing the internet by a dial up connection, there was no utility in K-->Internet menu to help you do that. You can invoke kppp in terminal:
and you will have a easy-to-use GUI utility to connect to internet. Why is it not in K-->Internet menu? I understand the menus are supposed to be organized as simple and uncluttered, but it is ONE application per task, not NONE, right? I think there should be a shortcut to a manual represented as an icon on desktop. Or maybe to come up automatically as a web page after easys is fully booted. It may contain instructions how to run applications not listed in main menu and some general help for less experienced users (me included).
